Best Truecaller Alternatives for Caller ID and Spam Blocking

SumitSumit···16 min read
Google, Samsung and Apple logos above the words Truecaller alternatives

Truecaller is the default caller ID app for millions of Indians. The basic app is free, but it shows ads, and the extras sit behind a subscription. On the Indian App Store, Truecaller Premium is ₹99 a month or ₹899 a year, and a Family plan for up to 4 extra members is ₹249 a month or ₹1,489 a year.

Price is not the main reason people leave. Privacy is. Truecaller builds its caller ID database partly from the address books of its users. If a friend installs it and allows contact access, your name and number can end up in that database, even if you never used the app. The ads, the constant upsell and a crowded interface push others away too.

The good news: you now have real choices, and some of them are already on your phone. Your Android dialer, your Samsung phone, your iPhone and even your mobile network can now flag spam, and India's CNAP service shows a caller's registered name without any app. This list covers 10 options. For each one we note the price, whether it shows real caller names, whether it uploads your contacts, and whether it needs an account. Every detail comes from official pages, app store listings or operator announcements. We have not run our own tests.

Built into your phone: no extra app

1. Google Phone app

  • Android

Built-in caller ID and spam filter · ANDROID

Google Phone is the default dialer on Pixel phones and many other Android handsets, and Google Play lists it for most phones on Android 9 and later. Its caller ID and spam feature is on by default. It warns you about likely spam and shows the names of businesses that call you.

Turn on Filter spam calls in Settings, then Caller ID and spam, and suspected spam will not ring at all. The calls still show in your call history. Fake call detection also warns you when a caller hides their identity or pretends to be one of your contacts. It needs Android 12 or later, Google Messages and RCS chats turned on. We explain it in our guide to Android fake call detection.

On privacy, Google's help page says numbers outside your contacts are sent to Google to look up a business name or check spam risk, and that Google does not receive numbers from your contact list. Call Screen, which answers unknown callers for you, works only on some phones, and Google says automatic screening is US only.

What you lose vs Truecaller: names for individual callers. Google mostly identifies businesses.

2. Samsung Smart Call

Galaxy caller ID, powered by Hiya · SAMSUNG

If you use a Samsung Galaxy phone, you already have a spam filter. Smart Call is built into Samsung's Phone app, and Samsung's India page says its features are provided by Hiya. Samsung adds that functions can vary by country and device.

Incoming calls are labelled as caller ID, suspected to be spam, or potential fraud, and you can block or report a number. Turn it on in the Phone app's call settings under Caller ID and spam protection. Samsung notes the lookup uses mobile data, which may cost extra on a metered plan.

What you lose vs Truecaller: crowdsourced names for private numbers. Smart Call is strongest on businesses and spam.

3. iPhone Call Screening and Silence Unknown Callers

Built-in call filtering · IPHONE

On recent iOS, go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone, and find Screen Unknown Callers. Ask Reason for Calling answers numbers that are not saved in your contacts and asks the caller why they are calling before your phone rings. Silence sends those numbers straight to voicemail. Either way, the call still shows in your recents.

Live Voicemail shows a live transcript as a caller leaves a message, so you can pick up if it matters. Apple's feature list includes English (India) for both Call Screening and Live Voicemail, along with English in the US, UK, Canada and Australia and several other languages. Apple notes calls are not screened while you are roaming.

What you lose vs Truecaller: any caller name for unknown numbers, and the risk of missing a genuine first-time call if you choose Silence.

4. CNAP (Calling Name Presentation)

Official caller name from the network · INDIA

CNAP is India's official answer to Truecaller. Your operator shows the caller's name on the incoming call screen, taken from the KYC records used when the SIM was bought. No app, no contact upload and no ads.

TRAI agreed with the Department of Telecommunications in October 2025 that CNAP should be on by default, with an option to opt out. Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL began a phased rollout in late 2025, circle by circle, and DoT set March 31, 2026 as the target for all circles. As of October 29, 2026, we could not find an official statement that every circle and every operator is covered. Whether you see a name still depends on your operator, your circle, the caller's network and your phone.

What you lose vs Truecaller: spam labels, and friendly names. CNAP shows the legal name on the SIM, which may not be the name you know.

5. Airtel AI spam alerts

Network spam labels · INDIA

Airtel launched network-level spam detection in September 2024. Airtel says it is free of cost and switched on automatically for every Airtel customer, with no app to download and no request to file. Suspected spam calls and SMS are labelled as they arrive.

In April 2025 Airtel added alerts for spam calls and SMS from international networks, and alerts in regional languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali. The regional language alerts work only on Android phones.

What you lose vs Truecaller: caller names and automatic blocking. Airtel labels the call, and you decide.

6. Jio spam and fraud alerts

Network spam labels · INDIA

Jio started showing spam and fraud labels on incoming calls around September 2025, after TRAI asked operators to flag spam at the network level. Like Airtel's system, it works without an app.

Early reports said it was still learning. Some users saw genuine numbers, such as delivery partners and bank agents, flagged as spam. Jio has not published how it decides what counts as spam.

What you lose vs Truecaller: caller names, blocking, and an easy way to correct a wrong label.

7. TRAI DND

  • Android
  • iPhone and iPad

Official Do Not Disturb and spam reporting · INDIA

TRAI DND is the regulator's own app. You verify your number with an OTP, then turn on full or partial Do Not Disturb and choose which categories of promotional calls and SMS you still want. You can also report unwanted commercial calls and SMS, and the app shows updates on what action was taken on your complaints.

DoT says you should file a complaint within 7 days of the call or SMS. TRAI's figures for April to June 2026 say this app accounted for 89% of all such complaints received by operators. TRAI's page notes the iPhone version has fewer features than the Android app, and its built-in spam detection works on SMS only.

What you lose vs Truecaller: caller ID. TRAI DND does not show who is calling. It is a reporting and prevention tool.

8. Hiya

  • Android
  • iPhone and iPad

Caller ID and spam blocker · APP

Hiya is the company behind Samsung's Smart Call, and its own app brings its spam database to any Android phone or iPhone. Outside the US and Canada, you get caller ID, spam and scam blocking, number lookup and voicemail protection.

Premium adds Call Screener, AI voice detection and fraud warnings, but both store listings say those work only in the US and Canada. That makes the free tier the sensible choice in India. Google Play does not list ads for the app. Its data safety section says it may collect personal info and contacts, so read the permissions before you allow contact access.

What you lose vs Truecaller: Truecaller's huge crowdsourced name database for personal numbers in India.

9. Should I Answer

  • Android
  • iPhone and iPad

Privacy-first spam blocker · APP

Should I Answer takes the opposite approach to Truecaller. Users rate unknown numbers anonymously as safe or spam, and after a moderator check those ratings go into a database stored on your phone. Lookups work without an internet connection.

Should I Answer app screenshots
Screenshots: Should I Answer on Google Play

You can set it to warn you or to block spam outright, including hidden, foreign and premium-rate numbers. The developer says the app cannot see your own number and never sends your contacts anywhere. Apple's privacy label says the developer collects no data, and the iPhone app has no ads. On iPhone, caller info, blocking and daily database updates need a subscription (₹149 a month in India) after a one-month trial.

What you lose vs Truecaller: caller names. You see a rating, not a person.

10. Showcaller

  • Android

Truecaller-style caller ID · APP

Showcaller is the closest match to Truecaller's look and feel on Android. It shows caller name and region when available, flags spam, blocks numbers, and includes reverse number lookup and a replacement dialer.

Showcaller app screenshots
Screenshots: Showcaller on Google Play

The Play listing says it contains ads and in-app purchases. It does not clearly say how it builds its name database, so check its permissions before you allow contact access.

What you lose vs Truecaller: a well-known, large database. Name coverage may be thinner.

Truecaller's privacy problem, and how to unlist your number

Truecaller's App Store listing says, "Your phonebook is never made searchable or publicly available." But the app still asks for your contacts. The listing's privacy section says it can collect contacts, coarse location, identifiers and search history, and that identifiers and usage data can be used to track you for third-party advertising.

The bigger issue is that you do not have to use Truecaller to be in it. Your name and number can come from someone else's address book. To remove yourself:

  • If you have a Truecaller account, deactivate it in the app first (Settings, then Privacy Center).
  • Go to truecaller.com/unlisting, enter your number and confirm. You do not need an account for this page.
  • Wait. Truecaller says removal can take up to 24 hours, and that unlisting cannot be reversed.

Worried about other apps that collect a lot about you? See our guide to Life360 alternatives for the same privacy question on location sharing.

What is the best free alternative to Truecaller?
On Android, the Google Phone app is the best free option. It flags spam, can filter spam calls so they do not ring, and shows business names. Google says it does not receive numbers from your contact list. Samsung users get similar protection from Smart Call, and iPhone users can turn on Screen Unknown Callers in Settings, Apps, Phone.
How much does Truecaller Premium cost in India?
As of October 29, 2026, the Indian App Store lists Truecaller Premium at ₹99 a month or ₹899 a year. The Family plan is ₹249 a month or ₹1,489 a year and covers up to 4 family members. Prices can differ on Google Play and change with offers.
What is CNAP and is it live?
CNAP (Calling Name Presentation) shows the caller's KYC-registered name on your screen, set by the operator with no app. TRAI and DoT made it on by default with an opt-out. Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL began a phased rollout in late 2025 with a March 31, 2026 target for all circles. As of October 29, 2026, availability still depends on your operator, circle and phone.
Does Truecaller upload my contacts?
Truecaller asks for access to your phonebook to work. It says your phonebook is never made searchable or publicly available, but its database is partly built from users' contacts, so your number can appear even if you never used the app. You can remove it at truecaller.com/unlisting.
Do Airtel and Jio block spam calls for free?
Both label suspected spam calls for free at the network level, with no app needed. Airtel's AI spam alerts are auto-activated for all customers and also cover calls and SMS from international networks. Jio started showing spam and fraud alerts around September 2025. Neither blocks the call automatically.
Can I remove my number from Truecaller without an account?
Yes. The unlisting page at truecaller.com/unlisting does not need an account. Truecaller says removal can take up to 24 hours and cannot be reversed. If you do have an account, deactivate it in the app first.
Can iPhone screen spam calls without an app?
Yes. On recent iOS, Settings, Apps, Phone, Screen Unknown Callers can ask unknown callers why they are calling before your phone rings, or silence them. Apple lists English (India) among the supported languages for Call Screening and Live Voicemail.
