Grand Theft Auto VI targets 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, and the PS5 Pro is not expected to deliver 60fps. Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson said the game runs at 30fps for now, and that he would need to consult the tech team about any 60fps mode. A technical analysis of the Extended Look footage says 60fps is extremely unlikely on any console in this generation.
The detail most readers miss is that the bottleneck is the CPU, not the GPU. That is why a faster graphics setting or a mid-generation console refresh does not solve it. It also makes the Xbox Series S the console to watch, since it has the least memory and storage of the four.
What Rockstar Said About 30fps
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told content creators including Davy Jones in August 2026 that GTA 6 "for now, is 30 FPS" on consoles, per an August 27, 2026 report. He said he would need to "consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option."
That is not a firm no. It is as close as Rockstar has come to confirming a 30fps target at launch. An August 28, 2026 report summarized that the game "will target 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles," which covers PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
What the Frame-Rate Analysis Found
A technical analysis examined the Extended Look footage that Rockstar released on Netflix and YouTube on August 27, 2026. The footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5 at a native resolution around 2560x1440. The frame rate is described as "relatively stable and well-paced 30fps output" with occasional single frame drops.
A technical analysis of a 60fps mode concluded there is "no way to regain enough GPU and particularly CPU time to make a 16.7ms update rate work," per an August 28, 2026 report. The game is CPU bound. The world simulation, AI, physics and rendering pipeline are all tuned around a 30fps frame budget, so doubling the rate would need different design choices, not just more power.
What the PS5 Pro Changes
Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will get PS5 Pro enhancements, per a September 16, 2026 report, and the official PlayStation Store listing now carries the "PS5 Pro Enhanced" tag (checked November 4, 2026). Neither the listing nor Rockstar says what the enhancements are.
The PS5 Pro CPU runs at a higher clock speed than the base PS5, for "roughly a seven per cent performance gain," per an August 28, 2026 report. That is nowhere near enough to double the frame rate.
Some retailer listings have shown a "quality/performance mode" selector. The analysis notes those are boilerplate and could refer to a choice between 30fps and 40fps for 120Hz displays, not 60fps, per a June 29, 2026 report.
A social media post by HipHopGamer claimed GTA 6 would hit 60fps on PS5 Pro. It gathered about 144,000 views, per an August 30, 2026 report, but it has no official backing and contradicts both Rockstar and the technical analysis.
GTA 6 on Xbox Series S: resolution, performance and storage
Officially, the Series S gets the same game on the same day as the Series X. The Xbox Store listing carries the "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" badge, and its only other listed capability is single player (checked November 4, 2026). It shows no 4K, 60fps, 120fps or HDR badge for either Xbox, and neither Rockstar nor Microsoft has published a separate Series S resolution or frame rate. The 30fps target Rockstar staff described covers all Xbox Series consoles, per the August 28, 2026 report cited above.
The listing does not show a real install size yet. Its size field still holds the roughly 329MB placeholder from the summer. The only official figure is Rockstar's November 3, 2026 Newswire post: up to 212GB, depending on the console. Rockstar has not said whether the Series S download is smaller than the Series X one.
What is only reported: a May 2025 technical analysis of the second trailer predicted the Series S would land at about 720p, against about 1440p on PS5 and Series X. It also expected ray-traced reflections to be cut back or removed, plus lower-resolution shadows, softer texture streaming and fewer volumetric effects. That analysis worked from trailer footage and hardware specs. Rockstar has not shown any Series S footage, so treat 720p as a prediction, not a spec. The main limit it cites is memory: the Series S has 10GB of RAM, against 16GB in the Series X and PS5.
Storage is the more certain problem. The standard Series S has a 512GB SSD, and only about 364GB of it is free for games out of the box, per hands-on reports at its November 2020 launch. An up-to-212GB download takes more than half of that, before a day-one patch and before any other game. Microsoft also sells a 1TB Series S, which has much more room.
Optimized Series X|S games must be played from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card, per Xbox Support. A USB drive can hold other games to clear space, but GTA 6 cannot run from it. On a 512GB Series S, the practical choices are deleting most other games, or adding a Storage Expansion Card. A 512GB card fits GTA 6 alone, and a 1TB card leaves room for a patch and the rest of your library.

Why 30fps Is the Realistic Target
GTA 6 is one of the most ambitious open-world games built. The simulation that tracks NPC routines, traffic, weather, wildlife and physics runs continuously. A 60fps target would halve the time available for all of it on the same CPU.
The Extended Look footage, which Rockstar confirmed was captured entirely on a base PS5, shows the game running at a stable 30fps with detail levels beyond GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2.
